An Appreciation of Charles Webster Leadbeater, Clairvoyant Author

Written on July 29, 2010 – 7:08 pm | by esbawso

As I prepare ezine articles I am surprised by the output of information from people I appreciate. I knew Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854-1934) as a result of a visit to a used bookstore in Kansas City in 1987 where I picked up three of his books about the occult. During research for this article I found that a wealth of material flowed from his pen. He produced 40 book volumes plus a plethora of pamphlets and journals. The modern interest in the occult truth is largely due to his ideas; Theosophical terms and principles are used by today’s writers. A few of his volumes include:

o Reincarnation (1898)

o Thought Forms (1901)

o Man Visible and Invisible (1902)

o The Inner Life (1911) in my library

o Man, Whence, How and Whither (1913)

o Vegetarianism and Occultism (1913)

o The Hidden Side of Things (1913) in my library

o Occult Chemistry Book (1916)

o The Chakras (1927) in my library

Leadbeater’s discovery of the young Jiddu Krishnamurti in 1909 was a high point in his life. Krishnamurti was believed to be the vessel for a “World Teacher” who would embody the pattern of Moses, Zoroaster, Christ, and Muhammad bringing a new religious teaching to the World. Both Krishnamurti and Leadbeater believed they could read past lives and published 30 such past lives in The Theosophist. Although Krihsnamurti contributed much to mankind in his life he did not attain the status of those before him.

In 1910 Leadbeater conducted deeper research into the akashic records at the Theosophical Society Headquarters in Adyar, India, and the results were recorded in this book Man: How, Whence, and Whither. He predicted the future society of Earth in the 27th century powered by atomic energy.

He collaborated with Annie Besant beginning in 1895. They investigated:

o The cosmos

o Beginnings of mankind

o Chemistry and the elements

o Visiting the masters in their astral bodies

In many religions the word occult is considered to be on the dark side as a bad thing. My experience was positive. The world of the unseen is mysterious and inviting. The depth of the unseen is often unclear in our everyday life but each person needs something to believe in to lighten the burden of supporting the material world. I find solace there. Life is an adventure and lifting the veil through the eyes of a clairvoyant is rewarding. My trip to that used book store opened new vistas to explore and broadened the search to find myself.

• My biggest FEAR in life is becoming dependent.
• The idea of depending on my boss, a medical doctor, expensive insurance or the government for my health care does not feel right.
Are there Solutions?
The answer is YES

How to Get a Book Published – Bookstores Sell 50% of Books Published

Written on July 28, 2010 – 1:57 pm | by esbawso

50% of books meant for consumers are sold through bookstores. If you’re wondering how to get a book published make sure your publisher’s books is stocked in bookstores. The first bookstores in the United States were established at least as far back as 1640. At that time, quite a few booksellers were also book publishers. By 1700 there were 30 booksellers in Boston alone. However, these stores didn’t restrict themselves to just books but sold other merchandise as well. Richard Hoe’s invention of the rotary press, which spewed out pages at the rate of 8000 sheets an hour, opened up the mass market for books. The divergence between bookseller and book publisher began to widen.

Book publishing is a $37 billion dollar industry in the United States. It has been estimated that the five large publishing companies, Random House Inc., Penguin USA, Simon & Schuster, Time Warner and HarperCollins, account for nearly eighty percent of all book sales in the US. This has occurred for the same reasons any other industry goes through consolidation: by combining certain administrative or staff functions, costs can be reduced and profits increased. Publishing, relative to many other industries, has not enjoyed a high Return on Investment (ROI) for investors. Now publishers are much more focused on having every single book they publish be profitable. This means a more risk averse philosophy, with a preference for publishing authors with successful track records–a sound business strategy.

Currently there are about 2000 chain bookstore locations. An additional 2200 independent booksellers belong to the American Booksellers Association. There are some 50,000 locations that sell books. Around 50% of books meant for retail sales are sold in bookstores, only about 10 -15% of new books are sold online.

Barnes and Noble is the largest chain with 796 stores. Annual revenues from those stores are $4.7 billion which translates into sales of almost 445 million books per year. A typical Barnes and Noble store offers 150,000 – 200,000 titles to shoppers.

Oddly enough Barnes and Noble is re-instituting the old fashioned idea that booksellers are also publishers. Its wholly owned company, Sterling Publishing, has the publishing or distribution rights to 10,000 titles and has actively published 5000. They own a chunk of IUniverse, a publish-on-demand company. The CEO of Barnes and Noble, Stephen Riggio, is the Chairman of the Board for IUniverse.

Borders Group owns about 1100 stores in the United States and has revenues of about $3.8 billion. It operates Borders Books and Music and Waldenbooks. The chain is the outgrowth of two independent bookstores. Walden Books was established by Lawrence Hoyt in 1962. Borders Books was established by Tom and Louis Borders in 1971. K-Mart Corporation purchased Walden Books, which in turn purchased Brentano’s Books in 1984. In 1991 K-mart purchased Borders Books and formed Borders-Walden Group and renamed it Borders Group, Inc. Borders Group Inc. then went public in 1995.

BooksAMillion was founded in 1917 as a news stand and has grown to 205 stores, primarily in the Southeast. They own a book distribution company, American Wholesale Book Company. Revenues were just a bit over $.5 billion in 2008.

Books are sold in a myriad of other locations besides bookstores, such as grocery and drugstores, at the airport, and in the big box stores like the aforementioned K-Mart.

Getting your book into bookstores is a critical step in how to get a book published.

A Comprehensive Guide to the Barnes & Noble E-book Reader Nook

Written on July 28, 2010 – 10:56 am | by esbawso

Amazon Kindle is one of the dominating products in e-book readers’ market. But with the launch of Barnes & Noble e-book reader Nook one this is sure that Amazon Kindle is going to get a tough competition. These two and other e-book readers available on the market provide more or less the same features to the users. Some of the features which a user normally looks for before buying an e-book reader are – wireless connectivity, internal storage, Internet access etc. all these features are available in Barnes & Noble Nook, but there are some additional ones available too. These additional features provided by Barnes & Noble Nook are the main reasons to make it a huge success in a short duration of time. Here we will talk about some of those additional features.

The best feature offered by Barnes & Noble Nook is its touch sensitive color display. Like Amazon Kindle Nook also uses e-link display technology to give its readers a real time experience. But the input method available in Nook is a touch screen. You can type your bookmarks using this on screen keyboard and being a gadget freak like me you are definitely going to enjoy this feature. Another feature which Nook offers is its WiFi receiver. This feature certainly fills in the gaps in the service provided by the AT&T. To use this WiFi facility all you need to do is to type in your network provider’s name and the encryption method used. All these information can be typed in using the on screen keyboard only.

As already said Barnes & Noble Nook also offers the features available in most of the e-book readers. But being priced at $259 and having some more advanced features made it a huge success in the market. During the first month of launch, Barnes & Noble Nook went out of stock in many stores just like Amazon Kindle did. This clearly explains how users are taking this e-book reader in to account. Whatever new features Barnes & Noble releases in future, Nook is going to stay in the market for a while.

Gatewood and Geronimo

Written on July 27, 2010 – 10:19 am | by esbawso

Gatewood and Geronimo A fascinating read if the movie made you curious… – Bruce Doran – Canberra, A.C.T. Australia
After watching, and enjoying, the movie ” Geronimo – An American Legend (1993) I became curious as to whether the portrayal of the key characters in the movie (i.e. Charles Gatewood and Geronimo/Goyakla) was accurate. I found Louis Kraft’s book to be very thorough and written in a way that made it accessible to a wide audience. My conclusion was that the movie was generally faithful. The story is certainly a sad one. Some of the things that emerge from the book such as Gatewood’s ongoing battle with illness and the military hierarchy after the end of the campaign and Geronimo’s repeated pleas as an old man for the army to be true to their word are not covered in the movie. It was very interesting to gain some historical insights into the Geronimo Campaign.
Remembering brave men – Smallchief –
If you don’t feel capable of wading through the Western history in this book, I suggest you see the movie “Geronimo.” It’s an excellent, slightly-fictionalized story of the Apache war chief Geronimo played by Wes Studi and Lt. Charles Gatewood played by Jason Patric.

Gatewood, the U.S. army’s foremost expert on the Apaches, persuaded Geronimo to surrender in 1886. Both Geronimo and Gatewood were betrayed by the U.S. government. Geronimo was sent to Florida to prison; Gateway was sent to oblivion, remaining a lieutenant until the end of his military career.

Geronimo is remarkable as a cunning, cruel guerilla leader fighting to keep his freedom from the encroaching Whites; Gatewood is remarkable for the integrity he brought to his job as an indian agent and soldier. It’s comforting to see Gatewood’s qualities are remembered in book and movie long after more conventionally successful men have been forgotten.

This book maintains a high standard of accuracy and scholarship. It tells one of the best stories from the old West.
You need look no further for the facts! – Quinton E. Ford –
I have not counted the number of books and papers regarding Geronimo’s surrender but they are many. Here are the facts, easy to read, accurate, and presented in a very enjoyable read. The author has done an excellent job presenting to the common man the story of bravery, death, and hardship of the early American soldier, and the betrayal of the American Indian. Many thanks to the author and publisher. Where are the awards for them?
: The two pre-eminent warriors of the Apache Wars between 1878 and 1886, Lieutenant Charles B. Gatewood of the Sixth United States Cavalry and Chiricahua leader Geronimo, respected one another in peace and feared one another in war. Within two years of his posting to Arizona in 1878, Gatewood became the army’s premier “Apache man” as both a commander of Apache scouts and a reservation administrator, but his equitable treatment of Indians aroused the enmity of civilian and military detractors, and the army shunned him. In the late 1870s Geronimo, a medicine man, emerged as a brilliant Chiricahua leader and fiercely resisted his people’s incarceration on inhospitable federal reservations. His fight for freedom, often bloody, in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico triggered the deployment of hundreds of United States and Mexican troops and Apache Scouts to hunt him and his people. In the end, the United States Army recalled Gatewood to Apache service, ordering him into the Sierra Madre of northern Mexico to locate Geronimo and negotiate his band’s surrender. Showing the depravity and desperation of the Apache wars, Louis Kraft dramatically recreates Gatewood’s final mission and poignantly recalls the United States government’s betrayal of the Chiricahuas, Geronimo, and Gatewood at the campaign’s end.

Great deal – Joshua Keller – Columbia, SC
No need to review theses blades. If you own the Fein MM, then you know how they are. Aside from the fact that Fein blades are overpriced in general, I thought this prices was fair and better than what I found on Ebay. I also like that guys idea to recut the blades using a Dremel. Imagine that, using one overpriced cutting blade to resharpen another overpriced cutting blade. No, I’m not bitter, it is what it is.

Rising For Irish Independence

Written on July 26, 2010 – 12:18 am | by esbawso

The Easter Rising of 1916 was the opening event for the Irish War of Independence. Occurring Easter Week in 1916, it was mainly centered in Dublin, although some surrounded communities were also involved.

The goal of the rising was to attain political freedom and establish an Irish Republic. With the outbreak of World War I, the British Government suspended the Home Rule Bill. Several Irish groups including the Citizen Army, the Irish Volunteers, and the Sinn Fein, decided that they needed to take a stand.

Under leadership of Padhraic Pearse, they began planning their uprising for Easter Sunday. They arranged for a series of parades to run throughout the city as a signal to the other rebels. Their plans were discovered and the parades were canceled. They decided to hold off until the next day.

Around noon on Easter Monday April 24th, about 2000 men lead by Pearse seized control of the Dublin post office (which became their headquarters) and many other strategic points in the city. They hoisted one tricolor flag on one side of the post office and a green flag with the inscription “Irish Republic” on the other. Pearse then read the Proclamation of the Republic. By the next morning, they controlled a considerable part of Dublin. British reinforcements began to arrive on Tuesday and Martial law was proclaimed. There were numerous street fights.

On the morning of April 29th, the post office was under violent attack and Pearse sent out an unconditional surrender. The leaders of the uprising were court- martialed and executed by firing squad. Military casualties were 116 dead, 368 wounded, and 9 missing. As for policemen, 16 died and 29 were injured. It’s believed that of the Irish, 64 rebels and 254 civilians died, and 2217 were wounded. A total of 3430 men and 79 women were arrested, although many were later released.

The leaders of the Rising were buried in the old prison yard of Arbor Hill Prison. A memorial was placed there and the Proclamation is inscribed on the wall in Irish and English.

The uprising was the first of a series of events that culminated in the establishment of the Irish Free State (later the Republic of Ireland). There are plans for centenary celebrations of the Easter Rising in 2016.
